How Does Somatic Therapy Work?

Somatic therapy can be done in person in Leytonstone, East London or on Zoom from anywhere in the world (there is no touch involved). It’s a space for you to let the body lead and tune into its innate wisdom. This is a gentle trauma informed modality where I help clients to softly nudge towards feeling safer in their body and nervous system, more embodied and more empowered. Each session lasts 1 hour. I work with clients ideally in a block of 6 Sessions or by pay as you go (see Prices below). Book a call with me to see if this is the right fit for you.

Somatic Therapy with Emily Hughes

Starting from Intention

In Somatic Therapy we start each session with an intention to explore an area of your life where you feel stuck - relationships, anger, anxiety, purpose, patterns of behaviour, sex, better boundaries, kinder relationship with your body, finding clarity on a big decision, exploring fear or anxiety related physical symptoms. We tune in to what the body is holding onto in relation to this issue.

About Me

I am a Conscious Parenting Coach, Breath work teacher and Somatic Therapist (I work with anyone for Somatic Therapy not just parents). My interest in Somatic Therapy came from finding talk therapy limited as so many of my issues manifested in strong physical sensations. I find working with the body fascinating and richly fulfilling as I see how quickly things shift and integrate for myself and my clients. I trained with the Focalizing Institute, a model of Somatic Therapy Pioneered by Dr Michael Picucci.

When I am not working you can find me with my two children pottering about in the garden, walking in the forest, taking baths and doing climate activism.

  • Talk therapy from a trained psychotherapist should always be the first option if you are in a state of crisis. Somatic Therapy is not a substitute for mental health intervention.

For those not in crisis, who are wishing to explore a different modality, Somatic Therapy can be a powerful practice.

Our body is giving us signals and cues all day long. We experience emotions first in our bodies and our body holds on to experiences of trauma, grief and feeling like we don’t belong. In somatic therapy we explore what the body is holding onto in a non linear way. Clients report feeling a strong sense of clarity and empowerment but in a way that is abstract beyond words and analysis.

For some people talk therapy can be hard. For some it can be retraumatising or they can get stuck in over-talking and make limited movement towards their goals. Sometimes the body is holding onto experiences from infancy which predate language and can thus be transformed more effectively by tuning into the body.

Sometimes talk therapy can feel power over in that one is being analysed by the therapist. In somatic therapy the power is with the body. We err away from analysis and stay in the realm of sensation, image and movement, trusting that the body knows how to work through our blocks if we allow it space to do so. My role as the somatic therapist is to co-regulate with the client and to offer questions to guide the client not to analyse or attribute meaning.

In my training as a coach sometimes we might bring a little bit of coaching into the practice to help integrate the experience but often clients have quite transformative experiences quite swiftly simply by being with the body.
